Nap Time Mirror

It’s only since buying our new home in the Kent countryside that I’ve bothered even considering up-cycling any furniture.  Didn’t seem worth the hassle in tiny north London flat with no garden…

So I decided to see what all the fuss is about with Annie Sloan Chalk Paints.  These are basically paints that ‘everyone’ raves on about for painting furniture but the main draw for me is the fact that you don’t need to sand or prime your surface. I don’t have time for sanding faff.  I bought 2 tester pots in Paris Grey and Antoinette to try out on an average/ugly gold framed mirror with a shiny, laminate type surface. I used the Antoinette with the tiniest blob of grey in it… the paint went on super easy and dried within 10 minutes (hot day).  After 2 coats, it looked a bit amateur but the nice lady in the shop did warn me of this initial disappointment and said to ‘not lose faith and to apply the wax’.  So I did. I then sanded some parts down so that the gold underneath peeped through in parts for a truly authentic Shabby look and waxed it again.

Voila.  I had up-cycled something into a fairly boring, dusty pink, shabby chic version of itself…hmmm.  This mirror was screaming out for some Ta-Da! So I decided some gold leaf polka dots would do the trick. Easily done by cutting out circles in masking tape, painting gilding glue within the circle, applying the gold leaf and peeling off the masking tape to reveal a nicely imperfect dot. I’m happy with that.  Even happier that the whole process took 2 hours and was achieved during a one-off, flukey, never happens mega nap…both kids at once! Yay me.

Washi Tape Jars

Just spent 20 minutes jazzing up my jars when I could have been hanging the washing out.

Swallow, Cut and Paste

My craft maternity break is coming to an end and I’m gearing up for my Not On The High Street store to open its doors again tomorrow…eeek!  Not sure how I’ll cope if it all suddenly kicks off but I’m looking forward to getting back on the Sellotape wagon.  I’m up most of the night anyway, might as well put sleep deprivation to good use…

I’ve been making these swallows as alternatives to what I currently offer, they will all be available on the site soon, as a set of three different sizes.  Some bright colours for the glorious summer ahead, whoop!

This is it…my blog has begun! Ooooh the potential.

It’s taken me AN AGE to write my first post so I thought I’d just get it out there and we can all move on with our lives…
